Old order Mennonite buggy owned by Amanda Graber

I read about a buggy accident where a lady and her grandson were riding in the buggy when the horse got spooked and took off. The grandson jumped off, but the carriage tipped over and the grandmother got dragged in it for several feet. When the horse was stopped, the lady was taken to the hospital. She is now recovering at home. Her address was in the paper and as it was only three towns over from and where I did not know Amish and Mennonites live, I went over there and found her house. Her granddaughter was selling canned goods and vegetables in one of the barns and allowed me to take pictures of their buggy. This is not the one that was in the accident-it was a total loss-but just like it. Also, inside where I bought the canned beets and potatoes were the lovely rag rugs that they had for sale. These rugs were made by the lady that was in the accident before she got hurt. The family is selling them to help pay for her medical bills.
I plan to go back there around the first of September to buy a rag rug for myself and see if we can’t work something about me obtaining some to put and sell on eBay. All the money would go to their family to help pay the bills. I asked if they still had the horse and the girl said-but they are selling it.
Like I said, I will check and see if I can work out something on the rag rugs. I will also be putting some Amish/Mennonite magazines on my eBay plus I have some Amish/Mennonite dresses and prayer caps for sale. Marilyn

I'm very pleased that Marilyn has decided to share her first ever post with the readers of this blog, and I hope Marilyn can put together more of these type of Stories from the Amish and Mennonite communities that are in her own back yard. So Marilyn you did a great job on what was a very timely news story from New York State, and a lot of news seems to be happening lately from from these fast growing plain communities in NY. And I hope that Marilyn can put together a follow-up post with Amanda and share with everyone on how she is doing, and how she felt being in the news headlines in so many newspapers across the country. Richard
You did put some pictures on a while back when I took pictures of the Gorham Fire Hall, Jean's house and Martha's house. I do plan on getting around and taking more pictures after my car gets fixed in the garage this week. I also want to go by Amanda's again, too. See how things are going since her accident. I didn't get to meet her last time and hopefully would get to meet her next time. This is my first post. ooks really nice. Thank you Richard.Marilyn
Welcome to your first real post Marilyn, and yes I remember those pictures of course. But I consider this to be your first real post since that was originally for one of Jeans post, and this one is 100% yours with your own content and writing. With a little help from your buddy and mentor being myself of course, lol. So remember Marilyn please don’t go Hollywood on us here at Amish Stories, and stay grounded now, lol. Richard
Oh Darn, Richard. I can't sign a contract with the studio for the movie Witness II?Marilyn
This was a wonderful glimpse into their lives. The rag rugs are beautiful!
Hi Jill,Those rag rugs are even more beautiful when you see them than the pictures. I am waiting for my car to get fixed in the garage Wednesday-then I wanr to run out there and buy one. Marilyn
No folks your not seeing things I have changed the recipe that was on Marilyn's post from New York cheese cake to chocolate cake, Marilyn sent me an e-mail letting me know that her favorite desert is pretty much chocolate anything. So for her I changed it to what sounds like a pretty delicious cake and like Marilyn I love most things chocolate, so if my car was made out of chocolate I would be bike riding to work because I wouldn’t have a car anymore, lol. So enjoy folks! Richard
Hi Richard, Thank you for such an intersting post by Marilyn. Marilyn, Bless you for trying to help this unfortunate lady. I will pray for a quick recovery.xoxoMichelle
P.S. Richard, I hope you enjoy your blog break!xoxo
Congratulations on your first real post Marilyn. I have patiently been waiting to read what you would post. I think it was very wonderful of you to go to Amandas home like that. Selling the rugs would be a wonderful idea. You say you are selling things on ebay also. How would I know what is being sold belongs to you for sure. I would like to have a look at what you are offering. What a blessing to live in such an area that you can have close contact with these people. Hope all works out with your car this week. You also took some great pictures. If you are open for questions I would wonder if you know Richard personally or if you have become good friends through the blog.My other question would be when something tragic happens to the plain people such as this and even Jeans fire how could we help? Even if we had the means to send a little financial help would they accept our help. Thank you so much for sharing with us I appreciate it very much. God Bless Veronica
Thank you, Richard for changing the desert for me. i am a CHOCOLATE person. I am not crazy about cheese cake. Veronica, I met Richard through Amish Stories. In fact we have never met face to face. One thing led to another and I told him I knew Jean. He asked if I thought she would write a post. She had to think about it, but did and has been doing it ever since. Now the other questions, I think that Richard would have to answer.Marilyn
Marilyn, that was a great first post and I am looking forward to more. The photos are really great. I love the house, so neat. What a good idea to help Amanda out by selling her rugs on eBay. I hope that works out. And, Richard, happy Labor Day.
I had a feeling that Marilyn would prefer this recipe since she absolutely loves chocolate, so I'm glad this replacement works for her. And Veronica I have at times on this blog posted various Amish that needed a helping hand by posting a contact for folks who are interested and would like to help. And before I forget I'm glad that you made that statement about the Amish/Mennonite newspaper the Budget stopped posting pen pal ads, this is what I have been telling folks who have asked me about pen pals for quite a while now and I have told them the same thing. I think its about safety and liability for the most part now with all of these papers, and while not impossible I think with everyone being somewhat busy finding a pen pal today would be pretty tough. Just think of Jean as a pen pal and she does read at times everyone's comments and truly enjoys receiving questions. I have talked with Marilyn on the phone at times and she knows what I look like, but a trip for me is in order to New York State to say hello to everyone. So I really hope to make that happen and I have talked with Marilyn about this before, now I wouldn’t want to cause a commotion since I'm a very minor celebrity of sorts, lol. I think with me being in NY that it would be like Woodstock (1969 all over again, so with that I say "make whoopie pie and not war! Richard
What an interesting post, I love learning more about the Amish lifestyle, and thank you for sharing their recipes with us !Last Spring, we visited our local Amish community, and returned home with all kinds of cakes and breads, homemade candles, tools, and more.I can't wait to return in the Fall.~Jo
that's a wonderful post, so good of you to help her. I don't deal with ebay, but would love to have at least 2 of her rugs.
Nice story. Love the rag rugs.
gosh so scary..thank you for sharing your storyBenny & Lily
The rag rugs are great. How wonderful that you can help Marilyn. Good on you.
Great post! I hope the grandma gets well soon. It's nice to see a slice of Amish life. Hmm I think I have chocolate cake on my mind. 🙂
Marilyn,I am confused…I thought that Amanda and her grandson were members of the Clyde Swish Amish community and not Old Order Mennonite. The buggy looks like the ones used south of Clyde by the Swish Amish.
Hi Tom,I didn't ask, I went by the dress they wore that had designs like the Old Order Mennonite do and they had electric running into their house. I very well could be wrong.Marilyn
How kind of Marilyn to help the lady I pray she is on the mend.. I am interested in purchasing a rag rug.. would love it if someone could notify me when you list some on ebay?
My car is going in the garage tomorrow. When I get it back I want to go back to their house and buy one rag rug for me. Also I want to see if we can't work something out about selling them. I know she doesn't care for computers. Maybe you can buy direct from her family. I also want to know if anything is set up with their bank as some people would like to donate money. I don't know what they are going to decide until I see them again. I have their address, but want to make sure they are willing to sell direct before I give it out. Marilyn
So glad you shared this. It's nice to hear a follow up to the news sometimes. Hoping she continues to mend. Thanks for the recipe!Have a great week,Karen
Well, the old car is in the garage this morning. I hope to have it back fixed so I can get on the road again. They said it should be done today. Marilyn
I am glad Amanda is ok and doing well and her grandson too. Being in a runaway carriage can be scary! I know this from experience. If I were closer I might be interested in the horse. I know enough to either bring it back around to driving or maybe switch careers and make a riding horse out of it. I didn't read the article yet to know what set the horse off, but many times after an accident, the sooner you can put the horse to a carriage and drive them again- the better. Restore their confidence and remove all thoughts of running away being a good thing to do. Good solid driving horses are often hard to come by and worth their weight in gold. I hope the best for the horse too.ichard thanks for stopping by my blog every so often. I may not always get a chance to pop in here, but when I do- there is always plenty to see, read and catch up on. LOVE the chocolate flower on the cake. That looks really good.
I got my car back today so I am on the road again. This evening I had to go some pleace and when I came home there was a Vivitar Digital Camera in a bag attached to my front door. I have no idea who it came from. It has to be brand new as it goes with my new computer. Now I have two Digital cameras, but that is fine because I will have one for back up if the batteries go dead or something else goes wrong with one camer I will have the other one. I just wish I knew who gave it to me to thank them. I live in an apartment complex so I think it is someone from here. Whoever it was is an angel.Marilyn
Hello Marilyn Glad to read that your car is fixed and running well. It is amazing how God sends little angels to bless us when we do not even realize we may need the blessing. My guess is he thought you did such a great job on your post with all the pictures he is encouraging you to do more blogs with pictures. Hope Richard is enjoying his blog break also. God Bless Veronica
Good morning folks and I'm impressed with the comments that Marilyn has recieved so far on her first post, and I thank everyone who has posted something to say. After I get back from my blog break I will be publishing my chat with Anna who is Amish and has a bed and breakfast in Lancaster county, she also has a computer and a web site which may surprise some people. This is a trend that I am now finding among the Amish so after years of having non-Amish design and run web sites for them they now are starting to do this themselves, so I think they want more control of what is becoming a very important part of their business which is the internet. Richard
Marilyn glad that you have your car back and I know even when it gets older and requires a little more attention (mechanic visits) I'm sure that your Lincoln fits you like a comfortable leather glove, so why not try and keep it as long as you can. I've always had a soft spot for those big rear wheel drive Lincoln's so I hope that Ford decides to bring back a traditional rear drive car and I hear that is supposed to be in the works, and that the platform from the 2014 Mustang will be used for such a car! Your post is doing very well Marilyn and I would love to say that I was the one who sent you that camera (It was not) but for the sake of lying here lets say that I did, so it looks like I've taken care of another employee here on Amish Stories who works for free folks, lol. But seriously Marilyn maybe its a sign from someone who is saying they would like to see more posts and Images from you, and if that's the case I have to say I agree with them and say I hope that happens and would be very pleased to post more from you here on Amish Stories. Richard
I never thought my first post would hit 30 comments, but it did. Thank you Richard. If you gave me the camera you had to make a fast run to New York and back in a half hour. That camera is really funny, but I appreciate whoever gave it to me. I will take my cameras out and take some more pictures. In the fall, it will be really beautiful. The pictures in this post are the first time I used the camera, so they came out real well.I get the hint, Richard,Marilyn
Marilyn since I do have a fairly fast car I was able to get to New York in only 29 mins, and still make it back in time to Pennsylvania to take my tea kettle off the stove to pour my first cup of tea (I dont drink hot tea as I'm a coffee man) but since I'm lying here why not go all the way in this story, lol. Now get out there kid and make me proud with more fine posts like this one, and Id love to get an update on Amanda as well. I have a curiosity with New York's Amish/Mennonite communities since I was born there, so I'm really glad that I have Marilyn living there so I can have a peek into the lives of these plain folks and the beauty of the area. Richard
Tell me another story, Richard, LOL Wings on the Mustang !!!I really like the Lincoln-she's old, but only 70,000 miles on it the first time around. I like the size especially in the winter. IF I have an accident-I have a fighting chance. Also I have back problems and have I tried other cars, but this one is the best on my back. I will get out to Amanda's but maybe not until next week some time. If I get a chance there is a place I want to go down state this weekend to an auction. I have tried to get there for several years and haven't made it, but I want to try again. It's new to me seeing the Amish in my area. I know Jean and Martha's families as they are Old Order Mennonite, but I dont know the Amish as well. I hope that changes. I want to go more places and meet more people. Also want to get more pictures for Amish Series.Marilyn
I have no doubt Marilyn that when possible we have not seen the last of your post's on this blog, and for me at least its fun going out and taking pictures knowing that I will be posting some of them on the internet for others to see and hopefully enjoy. And I'm hoping that some other folks who maybe stop over here will share some of their pictures as well, that's just some of the things that Id love to see more so time will tell but I remain hopeful. Richard
Hi, Marilyn – I would love to have the info for your ebay things! Thanks ~Sara
Hi Sara,Right now, I am putting on the magazines and haven't gotten to get the other items on. I really don't have a place to get correct light for pictures of the dresses so Jean said to bring them over and hang them on her clothes line-so I am thinking of doing that. It's suppose to rain this weekend, so I will see. My items are on ebay on" lincolnlady1121 I have a lot more magazines to get on and have more different items.Marilyn
Thank you Richard, for getting my ebay store on here. I know that took you a lot of work to get it on here. I forgot I had the store on there. Now everyone can find me. I will be adding things on as I have more magazines, the dresses and more. I am slow, but I will get them all on.Thanks Again, Richard,Marilyn
After spending some time looking I have found Marilyn's link to her eBay store page, we had some trouble finding it since she has never had the need to look for or provide this link before. So I really found it by accident by just playing around with the information that Marilyn had for me, with only a few extra things that I had to add to make this link work for Amish Stories. I forgot to add that last weekend I did go to this market called Yoder's in Lancaster that still sells some of its milk in glass bottles, so I bought a chocolate milk really just for the very rare chance to try milk again in glass. And the bottle itself is really nice so now its on one of my shelves down stairs, all of Yoder's milk is from their own farm in Lancaster county. The verdict on the choc milk would be very good so if your ever around the area stop in and try some, and when your done with drinking the milk you are left with a nice little souvenir to put somewhere! Richard
Thank you again Richard. I am glad you found it. I had things on ebay I didn't even know I had. That milk in glass sounds so good. I bet there is a different taste. A better taste.Marilyn
Before I leave for a little while I thought I would post what is your 40th comment Marilyn, so well done. To me the milk when its in a bottle (or anything really) just has a better taste period, maybe its my imagination playing tricks with my taste buds because I prefer bottles to plastic. I've noticed that a fair amount of markets like Yoder's or in my case Dutch-way which is also In Lebanon county has their very own dairy farms, and like Dutch-way I'm sure Yoder's makes their own ice cream as well. Both have restaurants which by the way I ate in when I bought that milk, and I had a simple burger called "the Yoder burger" along with a salad. The hamburger was much better than I would have thought to be honest and it was broiled on a real grill, so that pretty much did it for me and I strongly recommend its restaurant to anyone looking for a very good meal at fair prices. And they have a buffet for breakfast – dinner which I did not try because I'm trying to watch what I eat, but I did take a peek and I did see some Pennsylvania Dutch specialties like chicken – ham-fish-meatloaf, along with shoofly pie and local soups. Well I'm out of here for a bit so enjoy your day folks. Richard
I never thought that my post would hit anything like 40 omments. Guess that means I better get out and take more pictures to get on here. It it rains tomorrow and I can't go to the auction, I think I will take a run over to Amanda's and see how she is doing and what I can work out with the rag rugs. Thank everyone that has comments on and who put comments on. I really didn't expect this.Marilyn
Hello, Amish Stories. Your heartwarming works fascinates my heart. Thank you for your kindness and support. And i pray for you and yours peace.Have a good week-end. From Japan, ruma❃
I didn't get to Amanda's or to that auction that I wanted to, yesterday. We had a lot of wind, rain and there was a warning on our TV so I stayed close to home. In fact being a senior, I got a call on the phone from my electric company and the Red Cross telling what to do in case of emergency. Thank the Lord, the situation didn't get that bad that we had to do what they said, but it is notice to know they are there. As I live in senior citizen apartments our Community Room is where to go in case of emergency. Had this been an emergency situatation the Red Cross would have come, set up a food service, medical service, etc. in the Community Room. As some of our residents are retired nurses, and a lady that use to run a retaurant, all they have to do here is leave emergency food and medic supply. That allows the crew that would come to go help someone else. It's security to know we are taken care of.Marilyn
Marilyn we are having a pretty calm day here over my way in Pennsylvania at least so far today, so its not what you folks are experiencing in New York State from that passing storm. We did get a bad flood last Summer so thankfully that didn’t repeat again this Summer, but we do get some powerful winds here at times that can do some damage. I'm sure when things calm down you will stop by Amanda's to see how shes making out, and maybe put together another post as an update. I wonder what she thinks about the media after her accident and having her name and address being in the paper, and has there been folks coming by asking questions and taking pictures? I look forward to seeing some of the crafts that Amanda makes maybe on eBay and perhaps on your eBay store Marilyn. Richard
Her rugs are lovely. The chocolate cake reciepe is one I would love to try soon. Nice blog post!
Hope everyone is well. I have had problems posting comments so I will quickly say you have been missed Richard but I hope you are enjoying the break. Now I hope this will post. Veronica
Marilyn,How do I view ur ebay page?
You should be able to get there just by pushing where it says lincolnlady1121-treasures. That should get you there. I have a lot more items to put on, plaingirl. Marilyn
