On what was a very quite day in a park located in the northern Lancaster area. There was lots of activity on this day in what is mainly a old order Mennonite community.
In this small town in north Lancaster, you will find old order Mennonites living pretty much side by side with the Amish.
The buggy that is seen in the third image down had just entered the park as some young Mennonites gathered around it to chat with each other.
If i could sum-up one word for this day, i would have to say “controlled fun”. All these young Mennonites were very polite with none of the mischief that is typical with others their age. Lets say i was very impressed and pleased at what i had seen on this day with these young people, and i would say to their parents “a job well done”.
Richard from Amish Stories.
Good Morning Richard,I really enjoy the pictures. I also like the buggys-they look like Jean's. Hope you have a nice day,Marilyn
These old order Mennonite buggies are very business like for sure Marilyn compared i think to the Amish buggies. Glad you liked the images, ill post a few more from this day on friday. Richard
I call these the box buggy-it looks a box to me. For those of us that haven't ridden in a buggy before they are heck to get in. Jean and David had no problem-I did. LOL Can't wait to see what you will have on Friday. Marilyn
a lot of my attention right now is profiling these old order Mennonites of Lancaster county. I know very little about them compared to the Amish, which makes me even more interested in them. Richard
I didn't know anything about the Old Order Mennonites until I got to know Jean and David. Glad we sort of ran into each other. LOL Marilyn
you must mean that you almost ran them over with your lawn mower Marilyn, lol.Well im glad that you did run into them because they are good people for sure. Enjoy your day everyone im out for the day. Richard
Enjoyed the pictures Richard. It is great to get to know more about the Old Order Mennonites as I have very little knowledge about them. I have read some about the splits between different orders lately. It is amazing the information on the web. I hope Jean and David are enjoying working with Marilyn and yourself on Jeans writings. I hope it is a blessing to them as it is to me. I am thinking of you today Alice and hoping all went well this morning. It was great to get your email last night and I am looking forward to others. Thanks again for this blog and the blessing it has become in my life. Veronica
Really enjoyed the pictures and Jeans latest post!
Thank you for sharing your photography and writing talents. I look forward to all your blog posts. I enjoy anything Amish or Mennonites (old order) In North Texas, all we have are trucks and cars, more trucks and cars. Keep up the great work, God Bless you. Smiles, Pat
Greetings Kevin and Veronica, glad you enjoyed this little post. A lot of people think of Lancaster as a place that maybe has seen better days, not me. You really have to venture out from those tourist areas and when you do, trust me you will see the real Lancaster. Every place in Lancaster is pretty much real, so its not like something from Disney world. The Amish are very real as you all know, and yes route 30 does have t-shirt places and trinkets. What i like about Lancaster is that most of the tourist areas are pretty much in one place, which would be the intercourse area. Richard
Im sure Veronica that your weather in Canada is nice and warm right now. I should have bought these really nice drink coasters that had real maple leaves in each one. They were kind of pricey but I'm sorry that i didn't buy them when i was up there in Canada. That's the beauty of the internet, I'm sure i can find them online somewhere. Richard
Hello Richard!!! I am really enjoying the pics and stories about the old order Mennonites. Thanks for sharing!!!
Hey Blessed, funny you just got on Amish stories because i just changed the format a little again. I know the blue back ground on the sides is a little strange, id like to leave it up for a few days to see if it grows on everyone. I know a few of you wont like it, and ill keep that in mind. See folks im such a nice guy, lol. Richard
I think the heart of well-behaved children is teaching them "conservative" values! As usual, great photos Richard.
Hi Leigh, and i agree with you. And thanks for the visit. Richard
Just a further note on how much I do appreciate these posts on the old order mennonites. I first became more interested in them when we visited St. Jacob's in Ontario, and came across a long procession of buggies on the way back from church. There just isnt as much information out there as there is on the amish. I have picked up several books on them, but there just arent that many. So I really appreciate these posts!
Sorry I missed this I was having a rough day. Awesome pictures Richard!! It never ceases to amaze me how different Amish and Mennonite children behave compared to the rest of them in the world. Perhaps that is why people critisize them so much, they are jealous but don't want to do the work it takes to rear a child that way??
Thanks Kevin, and im really trying to focus on the old order Mennonites on Amish Stories. Its tough in finding any information on them, so your very right there. Maybe because of the fact that it is challenging is the main reason I'm seeking some answers about them. The best source of information would be from a old order Mennonite, and with Jeans post the information and her insights are proving to be invaluable. Richard
No problem Alice, as i know most everyone is busy during the week. So most drop by here when they get a chance. Glad you made it back. Richard
Enjoy your day folks. Richard
Hi Richard…yeah I had just made it and saw you changed the format some. I like the blue on the side :-)…have a great evening!
Thanks for stopping by Blessed, And dont forget to watch for Jeans post next tuesday. Richard
Im not sure about you guys, but last night over my way we had a tornado warning in effect, so the winds were kicking up along with heavy rain. The heat felt very Florida like on fri, and i mean that in a bad way. we had a fairly mild winter in south central Pennsylvania, i just hope were not paying for it with a wacky spring and summer. Richard
When I used to commute from Bridgeport TX to Weatherford TX (going to college) aroundSpringtown TX -I would always pass a group (kiddos walking or the "black buggie" when the weather was bad going to or from the local school there in springtown…..what order is that ….Amish, Quakers or Mennonites?I know the elders had 2-old wood paneled ford ltd wagons for getting "monthly supplies needed" I worked at McD's in Decatur TX & the elders would sometimes stop at the drive thru on the way to get livestock meds & such…..After awhile, I was able to find out he was from the spring town group but I never was "brave enough" (thought it was disrespectful) to ask…does anyone know about this group
