(Note new images and comments added to finish all winter images of Lancaster county) I thought id mix things up a little, and add a few pictures from different days that I was in Lancaster Pa this past winter. Those Amish buggies in a row were parked in a restaurant parking lot in Bird in Hand, so they may have been having a lunch meeting perhaps. As ive said before, im seeing more and more of the Amish using solar panels around their homes, and can you blame them?.On the last image, there must have been about 6 or 7 Amish teens riding in the smallish buggy, with one hanging on the back because there was just no room for him.Im not sure if they were trying to break any records, like in the 1960s or 70s in VW beetles. Does anyone remember that?. On another day I was at the green dragon market, so I thought id include a few food items like the biggest pretzel’s that I’ve ever seen in my life. And of course I had to take a picture of some whoopie pies that were front and center in most of the food booths at the market. The green buggy outside had me scratching my head a little, and as I was leaving the market a woman jumped in and went right past me on her way out. For anyone thinking about going to a large flea market in the Lancaster area, id recommend going to this market and a market called Roots. At both of these markets you will find both the Amish and Mennonites are featured prominently in selling their wares, especially when it comes to food. And if you’re a pretzel fan, you must try a large one , just make sure your hungry or have someone to share it with. Richard from Amish Stories.

Good Morning Richard,I've been to the Green Dragon Market !! That is really some place to see and when I come to Pennsylvania I would like to go there again. It was about 90 degrees outside when I was there so I didn't get to see the whole place and I would like to come back when it's a bit cooler and go through it all. If I remember it is a big place-some outside and some inside. Marilyn
The green Dragon is an old favorite around here in Lancaster. And i remember going there in the very early 1970s. Alot of great memorys going there. Its huge Marilyn, but the good thing about both are these 2 markets have indoor buildings with heat and a.c. Some tourist might miss these flea markets because theres really alot to do now in the area, but its worth a trip if you can fit it in. Roots is open only on tuesdays, while the Green Dragon is open on fridays. Richard
There is another one I went to, also. I think it is only for a few weeks during the summer. I can't remember the name of it. If you want to see a lot of Amish and Mennonites these markets are the place to go to. You also get the best food there-just leave your calories at the door. LOLMarilyn
Your right about leaving the calories at the door Marilyn, but then again most men dont care too much in that area.Lucky us,lol. Im heading out in a few mins, enjoy your day and feel free to post as many comments as you want. Until later. Richard
Hope you have a great day. Is there a place Kutz or something like that? I think that was the other one I went with my Pennsylvania friends. I won't go with them again-they like to get there and are always in a hurry to leave. I, on the other hand, like to go through and see the whole place. I'm not a slow bug, but then again, I don't run through either.Marilyn
Im almost out the door, i was not sure if i could unload the rest of Lancasters winter images the first time that i posted this. After finding out that i could, i added the rest of the pictures. On the last image, i was behind a smallish buggy with way too many Amish teens in it, must have been around 7 of them, and im not sure if you can tell, but one of them is hanging outside on the back of the buggy. Kind of reminded me of what they used to do with the VW Beetles, and would stuff as many people inside to break a record. Now im running late folks, im off. Richard
I am a recent person to your web site. I have enjoyed it very much and have added under my favorites and check in everyday. I had the pleasure of watching the four videos as well and thought they were great. I have never been to Lancaster and am planning to go this year. We live in St. Catharines, Ontario. I am so apppreciative of this blog and I thank you Richard for doing it. I hope it gives you as much happiness as it does to others. I am sure there as so many things to see in PA. that I will not know where to begin. I do have a question however. I would love to have an Amish pen pal and wonder if you know anything about this or if any would be willing to write someone like myself. I know they are private people and I have so much respect for how they live their lives. I ask myself everyday how we can simplify our lives more so we can appreciate one another and all the blessings we have. Have a great day!! Veronica
Welcome Veronica, I'm really glad that you find my blog worth visiting when your able, so please continue to drop by. And thanks for posting a comment, I'm really encouraging more to do that. And about the pen pals, I've recieved a few request from folks on that one. And let me give you a tried and true method in getting Amish pen pals. I know of some who have placed an ad in the budget, if your not aware of what the budget is, its a newspaper that caters to the Amish/Mennonites. Ive know folks who have put ads in the budget with good results, and here is the web site www. thebudgetnewspapers.com. I used to recieve this paper going back to the mid 1980s, so when you go on to the papers web site just contact them either by e-mail or by calling them. Tell them you would like to place an ad, i think they most likely will be putting that in the "notice" section. Keeping it short but to the point will keep the cost down, and id let it run for atleast 2 weeks. I hope this helps you Veronica, and please get back to me on the results. Also if you would like any tips from myself on places and things to do while in Lancaster, just e-mail me at Amishstorys@hotmail.com and ill try and help you out in that area. I also know of some very good restaurants, and clean but reasonable motels in Lancaster. Ill be doing some reviews of some of the better restaurants and motels in Lancaster, but that will be after your trip so let me know anytime. I've been going to the area sine the later 1960s as a child, and now living in the area I've seen some great places, and just so so places. Visit again and good luck to you. Richard
I didnt comment on the old but still used Ford n-series tractor in this post. Its really tough to kill those. This one looks to have been made in the 1940s, and its still being productive on this farm. Richard
Hi Richard, thanks for stopping by my blog. I love your blog, the pictures and reading the Amish/Mennonite stories. I am an avid reader of Amish stories and have read several about Lancaster county (Bird in Hand specifically). I can't wait to read more and will be checking in quite frequently. Have a wonderful day!!!
Welcome Blessed Tresses, im glad that you were able to find me. And thank you for that comment about the pictures in this blog, i really enjoy looking around every corner around here and atleast trying to take a few interesting images. im trying to get to the next level with Amish Stories with more in- dept stories of the Amish themselves. And thanks again for becoming a reader of this blog. Richard
I will be posting a new post on Thursday, this time Lebanon county will be featured. This will be the format that I'm trying to follow because I'm trying to show the slight differences between the 2 Amish settlements. Even though the 2 county's are connected to each other in both proximity , and with Lebanon being a sister settlement of Lancaster county's. The biggest difference being that Lebanon is not really marketed as a tourist destination as Lancaster is , and Lebanon is much smaller in size as a county and with its Amish population. Both county's are very beautiful, and i really feel privileged to live in such a picturesque place. I have to pinch myself sometimes, and i only hope some of my enthusiasm shows on this blog. Richard
Since Marilyn has not posted a comment just yet about re-making the movie "Witness", since I'm on now ill post my comment first. I'm fairly easy going about sticking to a post topic when posting comments, at least some of the time depending on the nature of the topic. In this case talking about a movie that's Amish related is fine with me. Myself and Marilyn have been going a little back and forth on how each of us would re-make this hugely popular movie made in 1985. So in kind of a dream-like thought, we both gave our own versions of how the plot would continue with a 2nd movie. Ok enough ramblings from me, now down to the movie re-make. I'm not sure you could even call it Witness 2, unless someone is witnessing something, so to keep it simple I'm calling it Witness 2. The year is 2011, at the beginning of the movie we see Harrison Fords character returning along with Kelly McGillis and a few of the actors who played minor rolls in the original. On the sequel i would have the very excellent actor Viggo Mortensen play a much more important role compared to when he made his movie debut in the original movie in 1985. Are you with me so far, good lets get into the plot. After living in Chicago for 14 years after moving from Philadelphia, and now about to retire from the police force in less than a year. John Books thoughts now turn back to the east coast, and to Lancaster Pa as a place to retire. Even though he did at first keep in touch with Rachel Lapp at the beginning, they slowly lost contact with each other as time went on. Both had gotten married a few years after they first met, but had moved on more and more with their lives. Always being easier for both of them to try and forget what transpired in that very special time and place in 1985. When John book arrives in Lancaster on what was a rainy and cold march day, he checks in at a motel off of route 30 in ronks Pa. There on the bed is information on Lancaster homes, and the local newspaper. From the other side of the room, he can barely read the head lines, which says "Lancaster murders continue". As he reads the story he can hardly believe this area would have a serial killer among its seemingly peaceful citizens, and its Amish.( I will be stopping here, and if i get a little response from readers, and Marilyn i will continue with my little story). Don't worry folks I'm not crazy or losing my mind, lol, I'm only pretending that I'm a movie screen writer working on a re-make of Witness. Richard
Sorry I had some work stuff to do today and just getting back here. To make it Witness. Rachel is a widow, again and now living with her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren. One night she can't sleep and hears a noise-like a scream or something and looks out her bedroom window. She says someone strangling someone, but she can't make out who it is. She awakes her son and he makes her stay inside while he goes out and looks. There is nothing out there. She contacts the police and they don't believe her. Even her son questions her-that maybe she was asleep and dreampt it. After seeing other murders in the paper she calls the Philadelphia (or Chicago) police department, but Book has retired. She doesn't tell them why she wants him, but that it is a personal police matter. After trying to get information from her-the police give up and call Book. Book who is also widowed. He remembers the times he and Rachel had and smiles. He does not call her back-he gets in the car and drives to her house. Rachel is heloing her daughter-in-law in the kitchen and they see the car drive. She answers the door and there is Boots. Boots wants to hear what Rachel has to say and listens to every word. After they are speaking her son comes and takes Boots aside and asks him if he believes what his mother said-son explains he thinks she saw it in a dresm. Boots believes every word and goes to the scene and finds something. He goes to the Police that can't solve the case and goes out on his own to see what he can find. Of course the romance between John Books and Rachel starts to come back again. Okay, Richard, what do you think !!!!!Marilyn
When i started reading your story Marilyn, you lost me at sorry, lol. What can i say, i love my story. Im kidding with you, yours is different than mines, but maybe we can bring the 2 together some how to make a great movie. I used to play this kind of game with some freinds of mine, so ive always liked it. We most likely will never see another "Witness" again, but it was fun regardless. Good night Marilyn, and everyone else on Amish stories. Richard
What I said before. No matter who did the killings has be to be the last person you ever thought it would be. IT can't be like Witness where you knew who it was from the start. It also can't be Rachel's son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren or any relative of her family. It would be neat if it could be someone from the original Witness movie. Maybe someone whose out to get John Books and Rachel and knew that killing other Amish would get Books there or something like that. Oh knew he was buying the house there and wanted to get him and Rachel. I don't know, but it is the last person you ever thought.Marilyn
Hey Marilyn, i was just going over Thursdays post before i place it on the blog in the morning. You have a great imagination, and i enjoyed talking about the movie Witness. And i really hope nothing violent should ever happen in Lancaster like in our made-up 2nd movie. Im not sure anyone could do any justice to another movie, somethings are best left alone as they are. that movie still has us talking about it , even after 26 years later, so it made an impact. And it made me type alot more than im used too, lol. Good night Marilyn. Richard
Good Morning,I hope that nothing like that really happens either, but if you read Amish novels, you don't know how many writers have that sort of stuff in them. Hope you have a great day,Marilyn
And a good thursday morning to you, and everyone. And like i think ive said before, ive never read any of those Amish fiction novels before. So i dont really know whats in them. All i do know is alot of the folks really like them, and id say the majority of them would be woman. Richard
a good friday morning to all. And a big welcome to those who are new readers on Amish Stories, make yourself at home. Richard
You're welcome Richard…your blog has become one of my daily favorites. I can't stay away :). I feel like I'm getting to glimpse into a way of life I that I find very interesting…have a great weekend!!!
You also Blessed Tresses, and Happy Easter to you and your family. Richard
