Last night in Lebanon county as the snow flakes were falling and the snow was starting to stick on the ground, i couldn’t help but admire the beauty of fresh falling snow. it looked like fresh pop corn floating down doing some sort of elaborate dance with each other, only to fall down into a sea of awaiting snow. It seems even snow has its own version of a social network like face book or my space. after all that admiring and peeking out the window, i went to sleep not thinking of what would be waiting for me in the morning. When i did wake-up, all i remember was a dream that i had about pop corn, yes ill admit it, i love the stuff. so this all sounds pretty good so far, right, until i opened the garage door. what i was seeing pretty much knocked the smile right off my face, it was more snow than ive seen in my driveway since moving up from Florida not very long ago. as i first stepped foot into the garage , the wheels started spinning in my head, how do i get out of shoveling all this. now if you remember, i was saying how beautiful this all looked the night before, maybe i was only looking through my rose colored window tints from my car, lol. So now it was time for me to go into action, i needed a plan and i needed it quick. one thing i thought about was to pass out on the driveway, in hopes that when i woke-up the driveway would be shoveled somehow. no that wont work, i already used that one before and it ended with me waking up and having a dog standing over me trying to do his business. Then i thought, i could just drive through all that snow, and maybe the sun would melt it all by the time i got home, no that just plain stupid. I have to tell you while im thinking of ways to get out from shoveling my driveway, i had yet to step foot outside of the garage, lol. In the end as i ran out of ways to avoid not shoveling, i put that smile back on my face and finally cleared that drive way, and remembering how beautiful the area that i live in is, and how lucky i am in being here. Hello Richard,Those pictures are beautiful. Whenever I get to your area again, I want to see some of the covered bridges. I missed those in the last times I was there. One thing about the apartment I live in-we don't shovel the snow. We have maintenance here and they take care of that and clearing the driveway. Oh, we have to clean off our cars because we don't have a garage.Marilyn in New York
Nothing wrong with having maintenance taking care of that shoveling. And im trying not to think about it, plus we have been lucky over here so far with the snow fall.I thought about all this shoveling stuff before i moved back up north, and im not even being close to being sorry that i did it. Ihave a question Marilyn, how far are you from the Amish in New york?. I will be buying a digital camera soon so i can put my own pictures on this site, so hang in there because ill be trying to make this site alitle better. It sounds like Alice has been busy with her ceramics, and i hope she finds the time to say hi our way.Have a great night Marilyn, stay warm. Richard
Hi,Maybe you could get some young fellow or kid in school in your neighborhood to shovel it for you. Everyone can always use a little money.I am about a hour away from the Amish in Clyde and Waterloo. When the weather gets better, I want to run over there. I don't know if they have any shops out of their homes. I know that there are many Mennonite Shops in Waterloo. There's the joke that the Mennonite own Waterloo as most of the business are owned by the Mennonites. I bet Alice is working really hard on her ceramics. Theya re really beautiful. I, too, hope she has a change to say hi our way. You have a great night, too, Richard. Hope you stay warm, too.Marilyn
I was kidding with Alice before and telling her that she better remove those made in china stickers from under those dishes that shes making, lol.if you have a digital camera Marilyn maybe you could send me some pictures of your trip over to clyde and waterloo, and ill put them on the site at some point. Richard
Greetings Richard and Marilyn!!Just popping in before I go waltzing through the shower and then get supper. Yes, I have been busy working on ceramics. Its been a little difficult getting back into the groove but I love it!! I will have some more pictures to post in the morning. Just need to put some finishing touches on this set of mixing bowls and then they will be ready for the kiln.Richard, I loved your story!! Couldn't help but giggle a time or two as I thought of how you teased me about having to shovel here.I wish I could hire a kid to help me Marilyn but none seem to want to work. I thought I had one kid lined up, he said he really wanted the money. But he has yet to show up after it snows, so I am always stuck doing it. I have resolved to own a snow blower before next winter.I don't mind shoveling but it takes its toll on me with the fibromyalgia.Well, I need to get through the shower. Will try to check back in later tonight before I go to bed.Love to both of you!Alice
Hi Richard and Alice,Alice – Glad you are keeping busy on your dishes. I bet they are beautiful. Can't wait to see them tomorrow.Richard, Yes I have a digital camera. I have to find exactly where the Amish are in Clyde and Waterloo, but I suppose I can ask when I get there. Of course, maybe I all I have to do is follow the buggies. I am not the greatest pictures taker, but when I get any-I will e-mail them. Hope you all sleep well,Marilyn
I just happened to think of something about the Amish a friend of mine that she and her husband live in Pennsylvania. The first place the owned was an Amish farm house and they convereted and had electric and phone put it. Anyway one of her children had somehow gotten into the cupboard and drank some cleaning fluid. They had been a snow storm, her husband was at work and there was so much snow she couldn't get the car out of the garage. She was out shoveling to get the car out and her Amish neighbor came by. She explained the situation so he told her to go inside. He went home, got his wife and came back with his team of horses. He pulled the car out to the plowed street with the horse team. His wife stayed and watched her other children while my friend took her child to the hospital. Her husband shoveled out the driveway and side walk. As my friend was a while at the hospital the Amish lady even made dinner. When my friend got back, there was dinner ready to eat, the children were safe and sound. My friend offered them money for doing all this and the Amish wouldn't take any of it. To top it all off the child had drunk an Amway product and I guess most Amway products are not poisoning-but it goes through you. What took so long was they were waiting for it to go through the child. Of course that was in the days before ambulances are as available as they are today. When they sold that house and bought another house in Denver-it went back to an Amish Family and out went the electric and phone again. They are still friends with the Amish people that came to help them that day and it been 20 or 30 years ago. Marilyn
Good morning folks…. that was some story Marilyn, maybe sometime you could talk with your friend about telling that story on this site, i think it would make for a interesting story as a topic. and as far as those pictures go, dont go out of your way, maybe just take your camera and if you see something interesting then just take a shot.Im just sorry that when i lived in New York state, i didnt go for a visit to check-out the few Amish communitys upthere. So i think a picture or two would be great to let folks see what a Amish community from New York looks like. We recieved alittle more snow last night, just a sprinkle so its not a big deal. Please let your friend know about this site, her comments would be welcome. Richard
Good Morning Richard,I will ask my friend, Ellen, to come on here. I don't know if she will-she doesn't e-mail me very often. LOL Would Mennonite buggy pictures be all right, too. We have several them near here – they are like Amish, dress like Amish except the ladies have prints on their dresses where the Amish don't. I will go to Clyde-it may be in the Spring though. There are a lot more in the state but Clyde and Waterloo are the closest-the rest are a way. Like I said before, some of the Amish may be moving into Gorham which is just a few miles down the road. Marilyn
Good morning Richard and Marilyn!!Nice story Marilyn, really enjoyed it!I won't get much done today on the ceramics, I have counseling this morning and then errands to run and did not sleep a wink last night for some reason. I did make a new post this morning with pictures from yesterday. But had to keep it short as I am about to run out the door.Hope you both have an awesome day!!Love to you both!Alice
Good Morning Alice,Have fun running around today. I went to your blog and saw your ceramics. I really like those colors. Loved seeing your kitty, too. He is a cuties. Hope you have a great day,Love to you, too,Marilyn
Greetings,Marilyn,,,, those colors are not exactly what they will look like when they are fired. They will be brighter and more intense.Faxon is the baby of the family. Adopted him last year from the shelter before he was to be put down. No one wanted him because he is blind in his right eye. I actually doctored the picture a bit to make the eye look better. I have an older cat too her name is Missy, she is somewhere between 18 and 20 years old. Skin and bones now but still getting around pretty good.Richard my dear I have never heard anyone say, real men don't have cats. So those who do, need to be ignored, LOL.I'll try to put a picture of my dog Rusty up tomorrow so you can see him. He has got to be one of the most beautiful dogs I have ever seen and I am not just saying that because he is my best buddy. He just has a beautiful face. You should have seen him when he was young. His face is mostly gray and white now but he had such beautiful markings.Wasn't much fun running around but I got done what I had to so I can stay in this weekend and work on ceramics, LOL. Doubt I will get much done today. Need a nap after I get Rusty in, he is out in the yard now.Love, Alice
Good Morning,How's the snow in Pennsylvania and Illinois? It's coming down in New York and we are suppose to have it worse tonight and tomorrow. We are getting what Illinois has now. Our Maintenance man hasn't even been around to clear the snow with his fancy blower yet. He must be having coffee before he starts out. LOLMarilyn
Good morning! Not much here yet in this county. Not nearly the amount of ice they were calling for, but we are just getting started really. Now they have us under a "Blizzard Warning" for today into tomorrow. Kind of surprised you are already getting it Marilyn, but I guess this storm is huge. I am still happy I postponed our appointment with the VA until next week. That would be a long ways from home to get stuck. Better to be safe than sorry.Have a good day. I woke up with a migraine and need to go rest for a while.Alice
Hello ALice,Glad you still have your power, I was worried about you. We are getting another storm right now-it's stopping. We are suppose to get yours starting this evening and go through tomorrow. Good think you did postpone your appoitment. I agree with your better be safe than sorry.Hope your migraine goes away.Love,Marilyn
Marilyn,,, do not worry, I am not. Even if we do lose power, I am well prepared and we will be fine.Looking at the way the storm is tracking, Danville, where we were suppose to go, has a lot more ice than we do. We might have gotten there and not been able to get home.I might not have a lot of book smarts but God sure gave me a lot of common sense and I use every bit He gave me, LOL.Just came in from putting ice melt on the sidewalk and driveway. Figured if I knock the ice down a bit it will be easier to keep the walks clean. Well, hopefully anyway.LOLYes there is a small storm just ahead of the big one. We just started snowing from the big one when I was outside. I'll keep my eye on it and am going to try to shovel each time it hits around 3 – 4 inches if I can. Hopefully, that will make it easier in the long run than trying to lift 18 inches to 2 feet at once. But the winds are kicking up to and that might make it a difficult task to keep up with it.Either way, it will work out in the end. But don't worry, we will be fine. :-DLove ya, Alice
I had to shovel alittle this morning, otherwise we are just waiting here in cental pennsylvania to see how much snow falls, and who will get the worst of it.Glad to see you still have power Alice, maybe for now anyway. And hello Marilyn, how are you making out with the snow your way in New york state.Richard
We have the snow really coming down here Richard and blowing hard winds. I think we will be ok as far as power goes as we did not get the ice that was expected. The ice would have taken down the power lines. Of course the winds might still do it but less likely. They are calling for close to 2 feet of snow here before all is said and done. I doubt I will be able to keep up with it as the wind is just so strong it is creating a lot of drifting along with the snow. Time will tell.Alice
Hi Folks,Well right now, the snowing stopped. It is suppose to start again around 10:00 PM tonight and go until 10:00 PM tomorrow night with the snow and ice that came from Illinois where Alice is and snow on Thursday. It is suppose to be nice on Friday, I suppose so we can dig out of the Wednesday and Thursday Blizzard. LOL Having fun digging out my friends.Marilyn
Good Morning Friends,Well, we made it through last night. We did get a few inches, but not as bad as we thought it would be. We have gone from Blizzard Warning to Snow Alert. The snow has stopped right now, but I guess more is coming. All the schools are closed, but I bet they could kick themselves now as it wasn't that bad. The kids are happy that they got a day off, I'm sure. Will keep you posted.Marilyn
Hi,,,, we lost cable and internet last night. Then the power went out. Just came back on a few minutes ago and I wanted to let you know we are OK. I need to get back to shoveling. We have about 18 inches here and a lot of drifting. Some places is 3 feet. Because of my back and shoulder I can only manage to clear a few feet at a time and then have to rest. I will be back on later today as long as we don't lose internet or power again.Love yas, Alice
Hi Alice,Glad you got everything back on. Hope it stays that way. Wish you could get someone to shovel that snow for you. You shouldn't be doing that. It hasn't been bad here, yet. It is suppose to snow again some more, but we had about 4 inches and it stopped. It did start up again, but not for long. We are suppose to get more, but I hope it passes over us. Talk with you later.Love back,Marilyn
Hi, a friend called just a bit ago, said he would be over in a little while to help me shovel out. Thank God!!We had started out like that on Monday. Hit and miss and not much to it,,, but then late yesterday afternoon, bam!! At one point it was coming down about 4 inches an hour. I could not keep up with the shoveling yesterday because of the severe wind.By golly if I am going to stay in the north I will either have a man that can and will shovel or I will have a snow blower. Hmmm,,, thinking the snow blower would be cheaper, LOL.Hope it misses you too Marilyn!!Love, Alice
Hello folks, yes im alive and well over here in penn. we have ice all over the place, and i was just outside trying to break-up some ice from the driveway.I think we have another front coming through here alittle behide the front that we just got.Im running out of places to put some of this snow, maybe i could send some down to florida so they could have more ice for their sodas and ice teas. How are you guys making out. Richard
Hi Alice and Richard,I am so glad God provided someone to move that snow for you. I'd go with the snow blower. LOLIt is snowing a little bit here. We could get 3 to 4 inches tonight and it is suppose to be over by noon tomorrow. We have another storm coming sometime next week, but I'm not concerned about that one now. I thank God, we didn't get it as bad as you and other places did. We didn't get the ice either. I would never wish a storm that you had on anyone. Hope you get all dug out.Love,Marilyn
Hi Marilyn,,,, Caleb did not move the snow FOR me,,,, he helped me move the snow. As for a snow blower, I will tell you the same thing I have had to tell several other people today,,, IF I had the money for a snow blower this year, I would have owned one by now. I did not have the money so hopefully I will by next winter. We got about half dug out and will do the rest tomorrow. I can not move any more I hurt so bad.Going to go stretch out on the couch for a while and unwind a bit, then hop in a hot shower and try to get some sleep tonight as I did not have any last night.Hope you have a good night and so happy to hear you did not get hit bad in this storm.Love, Alice
Good Morning,Oh, I thought Caleb was going to move all the snow for you. Well, at least help is better than nothing. I know how that goes with buying items. There are items I need and could use, but I have to save up for them, too. I am praying that God will see you get a snow blower-soon. I needed a scanner, printer copier bad as my old one went out and I write a paper for our apartments where I live. I was starting to save but would never be able to buy the unit I really needed even though my friend is a dealer. My friend came over to fix the old one and told me that had to go. I told I knew, but was saving up for it. A few days later she called me to tell me she was coming over and to get rid of my scanner. When she game she delivered me a Hewitt/Packard Office Jet. Oh, it's a beaut. She decided to get a new one for her store and was giving me the old one FREE. I was in shock !!! It's only a couple of years old, so its has lots of years ahead of it. So you never know – you may get that snow blower-God works in mysterious ways.Love,Marilyn
Congratulations on the printer Marilyn, and i hope you do get many more years out of it. Pretty clear here as far as the weather goes, everything is calm for now. Dont get me wrong, its still on the cool side, but the sun is shining and the sky is mostly blue. Richard
Good Morning Richard,Thank you so much on the printer. I still can't believe it. It is pretty clear here as the weather goes, too. No snow coming down, sun shining, and blue ski. It still is cold here though, but I'll take what we have. Now if I get the fellow who lives in the apartment across from me to go down and clean off my car I can go and pay some bills. Marilyn
Maybe you could ask Alice to drop over to clean your car,im sure you would love that, lol. Richard
I'm sure she would. LOL How about you coming over here and cleaning it off? LOLMarilyn
Ill send over that ground hog from Amish America, after hes done shoveling my driveway and making me lunch. Richard
Well the ground hog didn't show up and neither did the fellow next door so I had to clean the whole car off by myself. Marilyn
Hi Alice,I was wondering if there is some place I could talk to you about herbs sometime without taking up Richard's Amish Stories. The Mennonite Lady, Jean, added a few more to the list. She grows some so she said to bring your list out sometime and what she has she will give me as she always grows to many-although she does pot some and sell some at her roadside stand in the spring and summer. Marilyn
Just email me Marilyn. ceramics_lady@mchsi.com I have put my email address on amish america so many times I thought everyone had it by now. I've even gotten emails from folks I don't know, LOL.Alice
Thank you Alice, I am lincolnlady1121@yahoo.comThat's great you've gotten emails. I hope it was to buy your ceranics.Marilyn
Good Morning everyone,We are digging out up here-again. When you get the snow in Pennsylvania, please keep it in Pennsylvania you don't have to send it up here. LOL Marilyn
